Great White Shark Sighting on a Gloucester Whale Watch July 7, 2010.
By Bob MacKinnon Contributor
A Great White Shark tops off an awesome 7-Seas Whale Watch.
There are so many fantastic sights when you take a Gloucester Whale Watch and you never know what you might see off the shores of Cape Ann. A summer heat wave of 90 plus degrees and high humidity is a great reason to take a whale watch and spend a few hours in the cool ocean air to beat the heat.
My first whale watch was back in September 2002 and that year the thrill was seeing a Blue Whale. I did not understand how lucky I was until I learned that the largest animal on earth has only been spotted in the Massachusetts area a couple of times since the first spotting in 1981.
The whale watch starts off with the sights and sounds from America's Oldest Working Seaport as we sail out of Gloucester Harbor, past Ten Pound Island and the Gloucester Paint Factory. You can see the famous "Man at the Wheel" statue near Cut Bridge and the 2 Hammond Castles as you head past the Eastern Point Lighthouse and Breakwater.
The reached our first whale sighting about 50 minutes into our trip which was a single Humpback whale, as we continued we began seeing pairs of humpback whales together and finally an area where 3 humpback whales were just hanging around the boat together.
The Captain was determined to find a baby Humpback calf and her mother that were spotted in the area and while searching for the calf, we spotted a fin Whale (the greyhound of the see), which was traveling very fast and went right past the front of the boat. We were able to spot 2 or 3 fin whales as we located the baby calf and Mother, an amazing sight to see them side by side.
At one point there were so many whales in every direction it was impossible to keep count and then it happened, like a scene from Jaws, in the distance a fin was sticking out of the water and heading straight for us. I was on the very front of the boat with my wife and twin daughters when a Great While Shark came straight at us. It headed straight toward the front of the boat with only the dorsal fins sticking out of the water.
The Great White Shark was about 12 feet long and was later positively identified by 7 Seas Whale Watch Captain, Jay Frontierro after looking at the pictures taken of the shark.
Be sure to add a whale watch to your bucket list because you never know what you might see off the coastline of Massachusetts' North Shore. for more information and pictures visit 7SeasWhaleWatch.com.
